I have had several discussions regarding this topic with numerous people and have found that they don’t agree with my view or opinion on it. (Which of course is cool). We all have heard that God knows everything (which He does) and even knows exactly what our future holds for each one of us (also true), but with a twist.
However, does He know what we are going to do or choose in any given situation? I say No, which is why I get quirky looks when I give that opinion because most people think I should believe otherwise since I am frequently talking about my faith.
I don’t think God knows what we are going to do or choose, now hear me out first. When God created us, He gave us so many precious gifts, one of them was Free Will. This was HUGE because it is an absolute game changer to God. Bestowing us free will, I believe God purposely relinquishes His power to know what choices we will make. This makes sense to me because otherwise it wouldn’t be free choice if He knew already. (Still hear me out yet). He even states in the Bible that He has great hopes for our future. Well, if He knows everything, why would He have great hope?
I believe God doesn’t know what we are going to choose. Although, I believe He knows what choices we are thinking about and why we choose what we end up choosing (which is far more important than the choice itself). I believe He knows what the outcome will be of all the options that we can choose from.
For example, if I am contemplating of choice A B or C of something I am going to act on and choose in my life, He knows what the outcome/consequences will be if Choosing A, the outcome of choosing B and the outcome of choosing C, but He doesn’t know which one I WILL choose. He certainly knows which one I’m leaning towards and so forth because He knows my intentions. I like to think that He even gives us nudges or clues into choosing, BUT THE CHOICE IS STILL MINE.
That’s not a knock against God because it was Gift from God.
I suppose most who don’t agree with me when discussing this topic don’t particularly care for this point of view because it lessens their image of God. Making Him not as powerful as we like to believe. However, in my mind, it increases my image of God because it was an act of love, which makes Him even more powerful than I ever imagined. Giving us a beautiful gift that He knew would restrain some of His attributes.
This is what makes the gift of Free Will so amazing. Once again, God gave up something just so we could have something instead. That sounds familiar with another story in the New Testament.
CONCLUSION
We use the word “giving” so loosely in our daily lives. We seem to always talk about what we give to someone else as a good deed. But the true sense of giving would be that we would have to lose something of value, something that was important to us, not something just to take off our hands or being of very little significance.
